Whether you’re in need of ballistic body armor for law enforcement, for personal protection, or in preparation for the impending zombie apocalypse, there are a few things to consider before making a final decision. Shopping for ballistic body armor clothing and other kinds of protective gear can be confusing, especially if you’re unfamiliar with available options.

Here are a few things to keep mind that for both seasoned pros and amateurs to help make the selection process easier.

Level of protection

Did you know that there are several different ballistic body armor levels of protection? There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to protection levels. Determining which level of protection will work best for you has everything to do with what you need protection from. There are several different levels of protection, with Level I being the least amount of protection. For example, while similar, the protection level of tactical gear worn by military personnel will be slightly different than police duty gear. Make sure you’re using the appropriate level of protection for maximum performance levels and optimal protection.

Bullet proof?

As the name implies, ballistic body armor is meant to protect against just that ? ballistics or bullets. However it’s important to keep in mind that bullet proof vests aren’t necessarily bullet proof, rather they are bullet resistant. This means that while most ballistic armor can prevent a bullet from causing serious or fatal injury, in rare cases a bullet may pierce the armor. In fact, very few materials are actually bullet proof, including seemingly impenetrable man hole covers! It’s also important to note that ballistic body armor doesn’t protect against every time of threat, including knives.

The size is right

Body armor is most effective when its appropriately fitted. Important things to keep in mind when fitting oneself for body armor include the expansion of your chest while breathing, weight loss or gain, and body shape. If you gain or lose 5 to 10% of your body weight after being fitted for ballistic body armor, you will need a whole new vest! Women should also be fitted with body armor that is specifically molded to their shape.
